From Alexa to Innovation: An Exclusive Conversation with Ed Crump, Co-Founder & Inventor of Amazon Alexa
How the Co-Founder and Investor of Amazon Alexa Is Shaping the Future of Sports, Tech, and Entrepreneurship
When I first introduced Ed Crump at one of my events in 2024, I couldn’t help myself—I had to roast him just a little: “I hate Ed Crump for ruining my life.” The audience? Dying of laughter. Why? Because, yes, my name is Alexa, and yes, Ed is that Ed. The Ed who co-founded and named Amazon Alexa. Since that little tech marvel hit the market, my life has been an endless loop of “Alexa, turn on the lights,” “Alexa, play some music,” and “Alexa, are you spying on me?” (Don’t worry, I’m not).
Poking fun is what life is all about, right? And honestly, if it weren’t for my events, I wouldn’t have met Ed in the first place. Now, not only is he the genius behind Amazon Alexa, but he’s also my business partner. Talk about a full-circle moment.
But jokes aside, Ed Crump’s contributions to technology and innovation are nothing short of extraordinary. As one of the co-founders and patent holders of Amazon Alexa, Ed has revolutionized how we interact with technology. He has 30 years of experience bringing cutting-edge technologies to market and has left an indelible mark across industries—from sports tech to artificial intelligence.
In our latest Think Millions podcast episode, Ed shared his journey, insights, and the vision he’s now building as the Chief Technology Maverick at Champion Management Company (CMC). If you missed it, here are some key takeaways from the conversation.

1. The Story Behind Alexa
When I asked Ed how he came up with the name Alexa, he explained it wasn’t just a random pick. Amazon’s team used science to narrow down 1,500 potential names based on phonetics, global accessibility, and ease of recognition. Alexa was the winner for its simplicity and universality. (No hard feelings, Ed, but you owe me a lifetime supply of therapy.)
Interestingly, “Amazon” was also a contender for the wake word, but early testing proved disastrous. Imagine hundreds of developers saying, “I was just shopping on Amazon yesterday…” and every device in the room lighting up in response. Not ideal!
2. The Evolution of Innovation
One of Ed's most significant lessons is how innovation has transformed. Creating something new when Amazon Alexa was developed took years of research, experimentation, and collaboration. Thanks to tools like generative AI, entrepreneurs can significantly accelerate product development and innovation cycles. Ed said, “You can pull up an editor, ask AI to build you a scaffolding for an app, and start innovating from there.”
The game has changed, but the need for clarity, vision, and relentless execution remains the same.
3. Building the Dream Team
Managing large-scale cross-functional teams, like the one behind Alexa, requires exceptional leadership. Ed emphasized the importance of finding people who thrive in ambiguity, love solving complex problems, and are biased toward action. “You can teach skills,” he said, “but you can’t teach someone to have that innate drive to figure things out and push boundaries.”
Ed's advice is simple for entrepreneurs who struggle to find the right talent: Look for people who are excited about challenges and willing to take risks.

Let’s create something amazing together. And if you’ve ever shouted, “Alexa, turn on the lights,” you know who to thank.
